Part A: Phone or Tablet
Details:
To Chromecast you will want a phone or tablet running at minimum Android 5.0 or higher (AKA Android Lollipop) released back in 2014. Some devices also have built-in Miracast that works with compatible TVs and projectors. If you want to plug your phone or tablet directly into a TV or projector with HDMI cable instead of using Chromecast check that your phone or tablet supports either MHL (AKA Mobile High-Definition Link) or Slimport out.
B: Chromecast or Miracast for wireless connection.
or compatible cable or adaptor for wired connection.
Details:
Wireless
A Chromecast device allows you to wirelessly connect your phone or tablet to your TV or projector with Wifi. These devices can go for as low as $30. please check out our Chromecast guide for more info on that setup.
If both your phone/tablet AND your TV/projector support Miracast then you don’t need a Chromecast device or cables because both of your two devices will wirelessly connect to each other directly!
Wired
If your phone/tablet and your TV/projector supports MHL or Slimport then you just need the correct cable to connect your mobile device to your HDMI input on your TV/Projector.
If your phone/tablet supports MHL or Slimport but your TV or projector does not you can get an active adaptor device that can connect your mobile device to any TV or projector.
C: TV or Projector
Details:
Any TV or projector will work as long as it has an HDMI input. If your TV or projector does not have built-in Chromecast or Miracast you can plug in a Chromecast device directly into the HDMI input to allow it to wirelessly connect to your phone or tablet. If your TV or projector supports MHL or Slimport you can plug an adaptor cable directly from the phone or tablet into the HDMI port if your phone/tablet also supports it. If your TV or Projector does not support MHL or Slimport but your phone/tablet does then you just need an active adaptor device to connect everything together.
Active adaptors have a Micro USB or USB Type-C plugin on one side depending on what is compatible with your phone or tablet and an HDMI out on the other side that plugs into the TV or projector.
If you are connecting to a projector you can project your images on to white or light-colored walls, onto many window blinds or curtains, or onto any white translucent cloth material.
